Happy New Year to You!

Even though I’m not a fan of Resolutions…I do understand how the New Year brings about a renewed feeling, a new lease on life, and affords some people the opportunity (through time off work, around the holidays) to work on the house!

I wanted to share what we did for New Year 2015, to help with ideas for people looking to organize and pare down their lives in 2016.

*15 Bags for 2015 *

I set ourselves up for the New Year, by purchasing 15 Lawn & Garden Bags from Amazon.com.
These are tall, big bags!
And…it was my goal to fill Every. Single. One. Of. Them!!

I started out by labeling four bags with tag words, only items of said word would go into said bag :
GIVE = Anything we no longer needed, but is in good condition & can be re-loved!
ReCy = Recycle…because boxes will be emptied, papers will be old, etc. Recycle it!
eBay =  Because, YEAH, it’ll be fun to get some funds from all this work, right?!
TOSS = Trash! There’s gonna be trash! Items that are, literally, rubbish -or- items that just simply should not be given away, because they’re broken, holey, stained, etc. Just have a TOSS bag ready and dump that trash! It’ll feel SO good!
(OK, so I, also, made a BEAN Bag…for our little Bean, because opening up all these bags in front of him was ripe for play. I gave him his own bag to play with and then commandeered it when the novelty, luckily, wore off! 🙂 )

Bean BagI did not have a set count for each type of bag. I just simply knew that we needed to go through the house, room by room, and fill bags. At the end of it all, we had to have 15 of these monsters filled and out of the house!
Once a bag was filled, we’d start a new bag in it’s place.

How did we decide what needed to go?

We’ve moved so many times in a decade…SO freaking many times (including an overseas move!) Some of our boxes had, literally, not been opened in 5+yrs…eek!
Now that we have a toddler, our priorities and need for things has changed…drastically.

~ Thus, opening those 5yr old boxes, going through the contents, and remarking, “Whoa, I didn’t even know we still had this!!”, was a pretty good indication that we didn’t need “this” anymore…in a bag it went!

~ I’m big on feelings/emotions of things and how they make me feel. So, yes, I used the age-old purging technique of ‘how does this make me feel?’.
It works! There were, indeed, items that kind of gave me a low/sad feeling…why keep it!? In a bag it went!
I, also, had items that put a sweet smile on my face, but regardless, was not an item I needed to keep any longer…I wanted it to put a smile on someone else’s face vs. being pack-ratted away. So, in a bag it went!
But, of course, there were items that are just going to stay nicely packed away, because they are an important part of our lives. We just knew we had to keep it, but it would be placed in an organized manner in our new storage containers! (more on how we organized a bit later.)

~ AND…Sometimes, you just have no emotion at all…ya just pull something out and think, “Get rid of it! Why the crap do we still have this?” and in a bag it went!

~ Realistically, we did keep a “holding” pile…a pile of things that we couldn’t figure out. We’d go back to it every few weeks and rummage through…typically, we’d remove half of the pile and put it in a bag. Basically, it’s kinda in a pile for a reason, eh?! In a bag it went!

All of THIS, above, was not an easy, quick, and sometimes, not fun, task.
But we persevered, we completely filled all 15 bags by August 2015!

recy 5Then we started the drawn out task of
~ adding a ReCy Bag or TOSS Bag to our garbage/recycling collection,
~ listing eBay items for sale and re-allocating them into a new bag if they didn’t sell,
~ and, lastly, trying to find a service in Bend that would come pick up our GIVE bags! (We have a small car and couldn’t get all these bags in there…in fact, I don’t even know if one bag would have fit! HA!)

Side Note : The Teen Challenge Thrift Shop came out and picked up all our items (bags and other oversided items) for a $10 donation…Totally worth it!
(I’d called four different stores/locations, and was so happy that Teen Challenge offered this service.)

How many of each bag did we have?

All told, the number of each bag we ended up with was kind of surprising!
More ReCy bags than any and only one TOSS bag!

~ Five GIVE Bags (including bigger items that didn’t fit in bags.)
~ Eight ReCy Bags!
~ Only One eBay Bag
~ One TOSS Bag

*Now What?!*

Not wanting to get back into our ‘old’ ways…we followed up our purging with a big organizing binge! I went a little bonkers on the organizing front…but I LOVE the way it looks and feels!

garage holders

~ We got those awesome brooms, shovels, mops, etc. hanging holders from Loew’s for the garage.

closet organized

~ I picked up some great storage containers from Staples, I used them in the master closet for photos and other mementos, that wouldn’t fair well in the garage,

invitation to play supplies

and in the laundry room to hold my tot’s art/craft supplies for our fun ‘invitation to play’ art trays!

invitation to playing~ At the time, I ordered through a friend who is a ThirtyOne Bags consultant!
AND, NOW, I am!
First time I saw these, I wasn’t sure if they’d make a big enough difference in our home. Then I started looking at the site and considering options, including personalized embroidery.
Sooooo…I just decided to host my own party with my consultant friend!
Guest list : One! Me! (any my friend, too.)
This way I got all the goodies I wanted and tapped into the hostess specials.
I purchased during the big ‘stand tall insert’ month, so that I would get the organizational insert for the Large Utility Totes.

How did I use my ThirtyOne Bags to organize?

In the Laundry Room, sitting on the folding counter and organizing our winter accessories (brrr….), swim needs, and small items needed for my mama’s group events.
These are the awesome Your Way Rectangles with Personalization!

organized laundry roomIn the linen closet, to hold a full bed dress-up. Each Large Utility Tote has a full sheet set and blanket…making it easy for my hubs, or guests to grab and go…thus, makes it easy for me!
(if you don’t already do this, here’s how to fold a fitted sheet…then just tuck all the sheets and one pillowcase into the remaining pillowcase, for a sweet ready to grab bed package.)

guest blankeysI, also, used our new Thirty-One Bags in the car and linen closet.
Above, Large Utility Totes hold Blankets -and- a whole Guest Bedroom Set, ready to pull out and use…then dump everything back in there when taking it to laundry room.
Below, a Hostess Exclusive, at that time, came with a cube for the trunk, too!

car 31So…
Whew…
We did A Lot of work in 2015, I still have some stuff I’d like to “pretty up” and organize and that will come in time!

How about you?!
Where are you gonna go from here?

Happy New Year 2016!

Thank you for joining me here, at Mama Bendia, where I’ll provide product reviews, talk mama-ness, things to do in Central Oregon, baby-friendly restaurants, and general musings!

Upon signing up for Citrus Lane, we provided age and gender of our little guy and receive a wonderful box of age-appropriate goodies every month!

Here’s a look inside Citrus Lane’s September 2014 box for a 23mth-ish old boy :

~ Long Sleeve Tee from Tea Collection :
OK! I’m a mama obsessed with Tea Collection, I can’t help myself, I just love their clothes and designs. The styles are adorable and the quality is top-notch.
So far, I’ve actually found great used baby and toddler items on-line and at my local high-end children’s resale shop, Stone Soup.
And…then…this month Citrus Lane completely won me over…completely!
(I mean, I was already a fan, but still, they excelled!)
There was a little long-sleeved Tea Collection Tee for Bean in this month’s box!
WOOT!
Plus, an amazing promo code, which I quickly took advantage of.
Buying my first actual product(s) from Tea, themselves, was thrilling for me!
Then…we received the package! It came with a sweet little activity book for Bean! Pure awesomeness!
Way to go Tea Collection and Citrus Lane for teaming up! I’m a happy mama!
(More on Tea to come in a future post!)

Sept Tea
~ Foam 3D Links for Bath by Boon :
We’ve received Boon Bath toys in our Citrus Lane before…LOTS of them…and they are always so amazing! Bean loves his DIVE Bath Appliques and these Link were fairly similar.
Turns out the timing was terrific, as we had a 4yr old Birthday for a little friend coming up and these Bath Links were a great gift!
So…a great toy from Boon was given to another kiddo, I like that story!

Sept 2014 Bath

~ Write Your Own Labels from Emily Press :
Whoa! Cool idea!
Especially as Beans begins to become more social and we go places that require his name on his own items…good timing. Hoping they work out well!
We got little Animal themed ones!

Sept 2014 Labels

~ Disney Snack Bag from Bumkins :
We’ve received a few things from Bumkins in our Citrus Lane box in the past…wet bags, small snack bags, etc…I really like all the products we’ve received so far.
I like that this bag is larger and can hold a sandwich or larger item and it has the same washable fabric as our other Bumkins bags.
This was a ‘pick your item’ month with Citrus Lane and the print of this bag was the customization we got to choose.

Sept Bumkinds

~ FREE Citrus Lane Box for a Friend :
WHAT!? This is awesome! We received a code to send a free box to a friend! I take this as a win for being a Citrus Lane subscriber for so long!
I quickly jumped on this and sent out a box to my niece, 6mths older than Bean!
Can’t wait to see what she gets!

Sept 2014 Free box

If I had purchased all these items individually… I’d have easily spent more than $75, not including shipping & tax. We, also, received great coupon codes for almost every company/item represented in the box! We opt for a yearly membership, so we pay just about $16/mth… but you can go a month at a time for just $29 AND Get a whopping 50% off your very one 1st box here! It’s so fun watching our little guy open the Citrus Lane box every month!

We received Bean’s August Citrus Lane box and it got a little wordy… so we just added water! Wanna Try it out! Get 50% off your First Box here! Thank you for joining me here, on my Mama Bendia blog, where I’ll provide product reviews, talk mama-ness, things to do in Central Oregon, baby-friendly restaurants, and general musings! Upon signing up for Citrus Lane, we provided age and gender of our little guy and receive a wonderful box of age-appropriate goodies every month! Here’s a look inside Citrus Lane’s August 2014 box for a 22mth-ish old boy : ~ Alphabet Flash Cards by Petit Collage : Bean is savoring the ABCs… which I sing and sign in ASL (Thanks Touch Blue Sky Baby Sign Language Classes!)! He knows quite a few letters and enjoys ‘practicing’ the signs with me. So, I was thrilled to see these Alphabet cards in his box this month! These will make a super cute addition to our ABC repertoire! There are a number of Alphabet themes to choose from, and we happened to get Animals! Yay! We love animals in our house! We’ve received other items from Petit Collage… just as cute! August 2014 Citrus Lane (6) ~Tea for Two by Green Toys : While the Tea for Two set was created exclusively for Citrus Lane subscribers, Green Toys has a hit on their hands no matter the size of toy! We have lots of Green Toys in our home, including the full size Tea Set. What I liked was that this little set came in a mesh baggie with a little tea kettle, two tea cups, and two saucers… adorbs! And a perfect addition to the Tea Set with Spoons, Creamer, and Sugar Bowl that we already have. Bean was very happy to open this box while lunching in one of our favorite restaurants… he took a spot of … Water, in his! 😉 August 2014 Citrus Lane (5) ~ Reusable Cool It Buddy from Me4Kidz : Me4Kidz is a great little company that makes adorable first aid items for kiddos. We received their MediBuddy first aid kit in a previous Citrus Lane box! I love using little cooled packs on Bean’s ouchies and Bean loves them too. So, this was a great addition to our freezer! August 2014 Citrus Lane (2) ~ Language Video Digital Download from Little Pim : My mom is obsessed with Little Pim for the kiddos… she got us all a Spanish set last Holiday Season. I wasn’t so stoked and Bean was on to other things. I do want him to learn as much as possible and another language is a great idea… but I’m so into ASL (as mentioned above, hooked on it via Touch Blue Sky) and Bean enjoys the Signing Time with Alex and Leah videos so much, that I haven’t pushed another spoken language on him. Though I do like the Little Pim offers downloads AND they have Mandarin Chinese! August 2014 Citrus Lane (7) We, also, received a code to try out Care.com! If I had purchased all these items individually… I’d have easily spent about $35, not including shipping & tax. We, also, received great coupon codes for almost every company/item represented in the box! Our little guy is really embracing his toddlerhood and is very much into every learning opportunity on the planet!
We received Bean’s July Citrus Lane box and it was full of super fun things to help him do just that!

Wanna Try it out! Get 50% off your First Box here!

Thank you for joining me here at my Mama Bendia blog, where I’ll provide product reviews, talk mama-ness, things to do in Central Oregon, baby-friendly restaurants, and general musings!

Sooo… upon signing up for Citrus Lane, we provided age and gender of our little and now receive a wonderful box of age-appropriate goodies every month!

Here’s a look inside Citrus Lane’s July 2014 box for a 21mth-ish old boy :

~ My First Camera by Plan Toys :
Ummm… LOVE this!!
I think I loved it more than Bean, to begin with!
July was a ‘pick your item’ month… and the Plan Toys items was what I got to choose from; there was a Phone or a Camera… since we have a couple ‘toy phones’ already, I opted for the camera.
And. Was. Not. Disappointed!
Not only are Plan Toys made super well… sustainable and safe for baby… but their toys are adorable!
This camera has a actual button, a little wrist loop, and a rotating lens cover… and a kaleidoscope lens!!! Bean didn’t ‘get it’ when I first gave it to him and showed him how to look through the lens… it took about 4wks and then he walked around with it all day, while he looked through the lens, and told me everything he saw ; “Mama”, “Doggie”, “Balloon”, etc! Ummm… Adorable!
Thanks Plan Toys!

July Box CameraJuly Box Camera lens

~Aqueduck Faucet Extender :
Hmmm… sometimes I get things from Citrus Lane and I think we’ll never use them. Such was the case with this faucet extender by Peachy. However, I added it to our most used bathroom sink, just in case. Bean hadn’t really started washing his own hands yet, but he was getting close and has a bathroom stool by Bjorn to help him out.
THEN, we had a playdate and I noticed the kids that were just about 4-6mths older than Bean were having great success with the stool and faucet extender.
After that playdate, and a quick try at ‘the 3 day potty training’, I had Bean start washing his own hands more frequently. He’s now a pro, steps right up on the stool and puts his hands directly under the water… which easily reaches him due to this fascinating invention! 🙂
He’s still working on the potty training… but he’s not even two years old… so I’m happy with the fact that he wants to flush and interact with the toilet at all!

July Box Aqua

~ Silicone Placemat by Oogaa :
Soft and flexable placement… I had been on the look for a placement that we could take out to eat with us and Bean could color on with dry erase markers, then this was in our CL box! Timing!?! 🙂
We used it right away with some dry erase markers I bought, that were sold just for this purpose, unfortunately those markers do not wash out of clothing… so I’ve put this up for a bit while I figure things out.
This was our second Oogaa product from Citrus Lane… we received a silicone bowl a few months ago… so far, they have good stuff.

July Box Placemate cloringJuly Box Placemat

~ Mighty 4 Pouch by Plum Organics :
We’ve had some good luck with Plum Organics in our CL boxes in the past and I like that Citrus Lane is keeping up with Bean’s growing needs and offers food products geared to toddlers… It’s a nice way to try out something before we invest in a full package.

July Box Mighty

~ Pur~Protect SPF 30 by Pur~Lisse :
Yay! A little something for mama, baby, and daddy…!
We’ve received a Pur~Lisse product before… a lip protect! It was a nice addition to my daily lip needs… so I was excited to see this trial size of sunscreen, perfect size to keep in our JJCole travel diaper bag!

July Box Sunscreen

If I had purchased all these items individually… I’d have easily spent over $40, not including shipping & tax.
We, also, received great coupon codes for almost every company/item represented in the box!

We opt for a yearly membership, so we pay just about $16/mth… but you can go a month at time for just $29 AND Get a whopping 50% off your very one 1st box here!

~ A Disney Themed Bumkins Wet Bag :
This was a ‘pick your item’ month… so I got to pick the print of the wet bag coming to us. I picked Mickey Mouse, my little guy was lookin’ Mickey Apps at the time!
So, this item was not a surprise for me… though I loved receiving it! We have another Bumkins wet bag and it’s amazing when we go swimming… now that swimming includes mama, daddy, and a toddler (vs. mama -or- daddy and a baby in a baby swim class) we need ever more space to put our wet items.
Ta Da! Bumkins Wet bag to the rescue!

We are loving straw bottles in our home these days… so it was great fun to get one that had a super cute shark on it!
We love Skip Hop toys, in general, so this was a nice little surprise.

Here’s a look inside Citrus Lane’s April 2014 box for an 18mth-ish old boy :

~ Race Car!! from Green Toys :
This mama loves racing and loves cars! It was my mission to get my little guy ‘into’ cars… he now vroom vrooms around the house with various toys… cars included! So, when I saw this Race Car in the box, even I got all giddy! 🙂
If you are unfamiliar with Green Toys… go check them out!
They are a Bay Area company making toys, in the USA, out of 100% recycled Milk Jugs!
This Race car is the cutest thing… with a the #2 Recycling Logo right on it’s hood!
We received the Blue car, but make no qualms about it, Green Toys are equal for boys and girls… blue, red, and pink race cars… as well as Recycling Trucks, Trains, etc… serious fun for all!

~ Snack Bowls from Green Eats (aka : Green Toys) :
We already have a few Green Toys eatery items from the Tea Set I bought awhile ago. These Snack Bowls are a perfect addition! I can set Bean up with a bowl of blueberries and banana bread and he’s set, munching along while playing in his little Melissa & Doug kitchen!
The super awesome thing is these are, also, made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs.
They are Melamine-, BPA-, PVC-, and Phthalate-free! AND dishwasher safe… So I can keep Bean safe and clean with these great Green Eats!

April Box bowl of blueberries

~ Singalong Book & CD Set from Barefoot Books :
We’ve received a few board books from Barefoot in past boxes and they’ve been great… this is the first singalong book! I know their singalong books are fun, because we fell in love with “A Hold in the Bottom of the Sea” when we used to frequent The Reading Bug’s Story Time in the Bay Area’s cute peninsula town of San Carlos!
In our box this month we received, “The Animal Boogie” set… it contains a book and enhanced CD which features the song and an animated video.
I look forward to moving into our new home where Bean will have his own room to play and a little CD player for that room, so that we can boogie on down with him and the animals!!

In Lemon Verbena, my favorite scent of theirs! Oh, Wait, I just looked at their site.. they have so many more scents out now!! Yum! Might have to re-evaluate this… Radish!?!? That’s sounds interesting!

It is! That’s what I want anyway… I want my inaugural post on MamaBendia to be Awesome, Wonderful, Stupendous, Interesting, Magical…! 🙂

Huh!? Maybe I should just get it out there, instead of waiting for the magic to pop into my head and out through my keyboard!

What I really want is for this blog is to be interesting and helpful…
a place for me to share with you and for you to share with me!
I’d love to share my thoughts and joys of mommin’ in hopes of helping other new parents… though I’m anxious that I won’t be able to get my thoughts and emotions out, for fear of becoming too emotional… ha!

I’d like to write about how I was near 39 years old (!) when we were surprised by the excitement of a pregnancy!
That my little dude is a true joy (seriously, a true joy!) but, man, I didn’t know this mommin’ thing was actually kind of difficult!
That my little guy walked at 9.5mths and that sort of added to the difficulty, hee hee!
That I was scared as crap to give birth!
That my baby’s birth was, actually, quite ‘easy’ and miraculous and amazing!
That I sometimes get bored being a stay-at-home mom!
That I sometimes only want to just sit on the floor and watch my boy explore, learn, and babble at me!

That my baby’s huge, cheeky smile and accompanying laugh is easily the best thing I get to see and hear all day long… it’s so amazing I sometimes just want to cry from the sheer joy if it!

That… that…

That, of the three blogs I keep right now, this… this is the one I want to nurture, as I nurture my little guy… for it to grow into something wonderful and amazing!

Hey… I think maybe I’ll be able to do this afterall!

What I’ve realized, writing for my other blogs, is that the direction leans towards sharing information…
I greatly enjoy writing reviews and here I’d like to continue that in the hopes that I might share information about something that can help another parent.

All of this focused on the topic of Mommin’ from (near and/or around) Bend, Ore!
Hmmm, just kind of Mommin’ in General… ya know, all the hard work we do and how we do it and why!
So, you don’t really have to be a Bend Parent to find enjoyment and resource out of my blog!
(Wellll, actually, I really like to travel… so I’ll probably throw in posts here and there relating to a place one might be able to get to easily from Bend! Or how about just Travelin’ with Baby!? 🙂 )

If you’ll take this ride with me… I’ve got a seat for you!

Thanks for the read,

Mama (E’lan) Bendia signing off… For now!
